Search federal grants
This searches the official Grants.gov database live. Nothing here is a loan, and there is never a fee to apply.
Reality check before you search
SBA states that it does not provide grants to start or expand a business. Its grants go to nonprofits, universities and resource partners for counseling and training, plus narrow programs for research, manufacturing and exporting. Most federal money for businesses is in the form of loans.
Checking the live numbers…
That is why the best use of this page is finding grants that match a specific mission: research, agriculture, energy, rural development, community or nonprofit work. For general business funding, see the loan types and uncommon ways to finance.
How to read a grant listing
- Eligibility matters most. Read the full listing on Grants.gov to confirm your type of organization qualifies.
- Many grants reimburse costs after you spend the money, or require matching funds.
- Deadlines are firm. Registration (including SAM.gov for most federal awards) can take weeks, so start early.
- Ask for help. Your local SBDC or a university research office can review an application at no cost.
Avoid grant scams
- Anyone who calls, texts or messages you to say you won or are guaranteed a "government grant" is running a scam. Agencies do not cold-call people with grants.
- You never pay a fee to apply on Grants.gov or to receive an award. Be wary of "grant coaching" that charges thousands of dollars for public information.
- SBA says it communicates only from email addresses ending in @sba.gov.
- Be cautious of upfront fees for a loan, "guaranteed approval," and pressure to sign today.
